‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ is an action-adventure science fiction film which brings us the story of a young Han Solo who, in pursuit of her lover Qi’ra, joins a gang of galactic criminals who travel from planet to planet in order steal valuable items. Released on 23rd May 2018, this film mainly focuses on Han Solo and his adventure with Chewbacca as they work together to fight against the galactic band of smugglers known as Crimson Dawn.
The newest film which expands to the Star Wars universe has successfully managed to maintain its reputation as dark and amazingly packed with action. Starting off with the plot of the film, ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ can be considered one of those films which is fully packed with action and adventure, as it keeps the viewers glued to their seats in interest. The film portrays a world full of poverty and injustice, where the land is governed by the law of the jungle -survival of the fittest-. Children are forced to steal valuable goods in order to survive and thus, leads to the story of a young Han Solo who gets separated from his lover in attempting to steal for the both of them. The film enlightens its viewers by providing a complete backstory about Solo’s past and how he won the Millennium Falcon from the likes of Lando Calrissian. The story also describes the relationship between Han and Chewbacca and how both of them were looked upon as worthless beings in a crooked world. In order to survive, they had to put aside their differences and work together to escape their confinements. Moving on to the plot, the film as a whole was full of surprises and twists as the viewers get to see how Vos and Han try to deceive each other on different occasions, most notably when Han and Beckett are confronted by the Enfys. At another time, Beckett initially betrays Han by reporting on him but just when it seemed like the end of him, Beckett suddenly announces that he has put Han on his next retrieval mission. The cast also does an amazing job in fulfilling the shoes of some very influential characters. Of all others, fans believe that Alden Ehrenreich does a fantastic job playing the character of Han Solo and has ended up exceeding their expectations. Alden can be seen brilliantly portraying Han’s personality and his typical attitude throughout the film. Donald Glover also delivers a powerful act while playing Lando as he brings a burst of colour each time he shows up on screen, especially when he takes part in the action with Han.
Despite having such impactful factors, the film still has not been able to perform well in the box office. One can say that the film has been overshadowed by the likes of ‘Deadpool 2’, ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ but critics believe otherwise. The film has been heavily criticized for casting Emilia Clarke as Han’s girlfriend, Qi’ra. Critics argue that the romantic chemistry between Clarke and Ehrenreich has turned out to be a total failure, seeing how Emilia Clarke’s acting has proven to be bitter and dry. Alden Ehrenreich although does a fine job in portraying Han but regardless, fans still believe that he has not done justice to Harrison Ford’s version of Han Solo. The plot, although interesting, has been claimed to be dull as critics believe that Ron Howard has effortlessly tried too hard in stretching the plot and making the film seem as an extra. As a result, the ending of the film, as described by viewers, is more or a cliché.
On a whole, ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ is a film for those fans who want to know the background story of their favourite rogue smuggler, Han Solo. The movie provides a generous description of the background and struggles concerning Solo as well as his relationship with Chewbacca. One can say that the film is just extra but then again, that is the whole purpose of a spin-off film.
