Skyscraper is an American action film produced by Legendary Pictures, Flynn Picture Company, and Seven Bucks Productions. Released on 1st July 2018, Skyscraper begins as we get to see how Asian investors, financing for the construction of the world’s tallest skyscraper in Hong Kong, are forced to pay ransom to gangsters controlled by an individual named Kores Botha. The financers agree to pay the ransom however, at the same time they track down Botha’s international money laundering scheme and save it on a memory card, so they could blackmail Botha if he illegally tries to force them into paying him a ransom again. Botha finds out about the memory card, and in a state of revenge, starts a fire on the 96th floor of the building. On the other end, a former FBI Hostage Rescue Team leader and an army veteran, Will Sawyer, is blamed for negligence as he was responsible for overseeing the security measures in the project. Sawyer, knowing that his wife and two kids being stuck on the floors directly above the 96th, escapes from the police and heads out personally to save them. Sawyer manages to climb up and save his wife and son after having to bring them to safety through a partially working elevator. Sawyer’s daughter, Georgia, however, is kidnapped by Botha who threatens Sawyer to let him escape in exchange for his daughter’s safety. After an intense action scene, Sawyer manages to kill Botha, meanwhile, Sawyer’s wife manages to override the skyscraper’s system through a stolen tablet and succeeds in putting out the fire. The film ends as Sawyer gets to reunite with his family.

When we talk about a film which features someone like Dwayne Johnson, it instantly means that the film has potential to headline the world of entertainment. From climbing an extremely tall construction cane to carrying a falling bridge bare handed, Dwayne never fails to impress the audience with his ripped physique and superhuman stunts. The leading visual effects companies working on this film consisted of Industrial Light & Magic and Motion Pictures Company. The film truly holds some stunning scenes which revolves around the character of Will Sawyer, an ex-FBI agent with a prosthetic leg who is desperate to save his family.

Despite the action it holds, Skyscraper has not been received very well by the viewers. Fans and critics have argued that although the movie holds intense action, the overall script of the film is a cliché. In addition, fans have also complained how director Rawson didn’t make use of Dwayne’s full potential by failing to provide him with proper supporting actors and visual effects.

The main theme song of the film was composed by Steve Jablonsky who explained how he didn’t want to make the score as if the film was a superhero movie. Jablonsky added that the score needed to be more grounded, like Dwayne’s character.

Overall, Skyscraper has managed to just average on the box office so far, only crossing $64 million in three weeks. One can say that the film had intense competition as it was released at the same time as Hotel Transylvania 3 but regardless, the film holds some intense action scenes and moments that simply stunned its viewers altogether.
